I’ve always felt that real experience is better than fake projects. If you’re just starting out, look ultra-local. Contacts your friends, family, school, community, and see what work you can find that, as you say, is genuinely helping a business in need. The priority at this stage isn’t to make money or to work with your dream clients yet, it’s just to get some experience under your belt, projects in your portfolio, and satisfied clients you will give you good referrals.
