I adore this article Lauren. I’ve been facing the same issue of being too busy, and been been turning down a lot of work for all the same reasons you’ve outlined. Although my criteria (green and red lights) are not as neatly defined. I know them in my head, but the exercise of writing them down would further clarify my position.

So many creatives cover the topic of how to get more clients, because that’s what noobs need, but few talk about the struggles successful business owners or freelancers have when they get in-demand and are faced with new kinds of dilemmas. I’m writing a piece on it now in fact.

Thanks for this great advice. It’s inspired me to get even more clear about what’s a yes and what’s a no, and how vitally important it is to say no often to steer your business in the right direction.
