Dave this is a fantastic insight into what makes a valuable designer. I really resonated with the points about allowing designers to be multidisciplinary and recognising those who are curious learners.

I come from the freelance world. I’ve never hired anyone, and I’ll probably never try to get hired (although each new client sort of “hires” me for each project). However so many of these point are universal enough that they equate to a designer’s value in any situation: as part of a large team at an agency, or as a one-person self-employed micro-business.

Any designer that loves what they do, appreciates how they got there, and (importantly) knows how to learn and adapt, is going to offer a lot of value to their team and clients.
